Lockheed Partners with Teachers for Satellite, Spaceflight Fellowship; Emily Simone Comments

LockheedLogoLockheed Martin has partnered with the National Science Teachers Association to host six high school science teachers in a two day military satellite launch and human spaceflight program tour.

The teachers from Florida and Colorado will be allowed behind-the-scenes access to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station‘s launch pad from July 18 to 19 , Lockheed Martin said Friday.

“These types of mentoring and networking relationships between working scientists and science teachers can dramatically improve how science is taught and learned,” said Emily Simone, Lockheed Martin’s director of community relations.

The teachers will also be able to watch the launch of the US Navy‘s second mobile user objective system aboard the Atlas V rocket, take a manned spaceflight tour and the Orion multi-purpose crew vehicle operation and checkout facility.

The chosen teachers will also meet with Lockheed Martin executives and U.S. Navy representatives.

“Hands-on experiences like these enable teachers to connect their curriculum to real-world applications, which not only fosters student engagement, but vividly demonstrates for young people how their learning is linked to future career options in the STEM fields,” said David Evans, NSTA executive director.
