OMB Calls for Improved Financial Data Quality

OMB LOGONorman Dong, Office of Management and Budget deputy comptroller, has outlined a plan designed to maintain USAspending.gov data as reliable, accurate and complete, according to a CGI Initiative for Collaborative Government article.

Patricia Healy, an executive consultant at CGI, cited Dong’s June 12 memorandum titled “Improving Data Quality for USAspending.gov” to agency chief financial officers in a CollaborativeGov.org blog entry Wednesday.

In the memo, Dong said quality of USASpending.gov information, which includes prime federal award financial data, will provide an opportunity for improved transparency and analysis of federal spending.

The measures mentioned in Dong’s framework include subjecting the data to senior management scrutiny, diligent checks and research.

Healy writes that coupled with internal control policies and processes already in place, the OMB proposal aims to bring discipline to this data collection and compilation.

USAspending.gov tracks government expenditures from contracts, grants and other financial assistance.
