SAIC to Co-Host Maryland Cyber Challenge; Lou Von Thaer Comments

SAIC-LogoScience Applications International Corp., the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and the state’s Department of Business and Economic Development will co-host an annual competition that seeks to discover aspiring cybersecurity professionals.

The third Maryland Cyber Challenge will take place at the Baltmore Convention Center in October to coincide with the Cyber Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the CyberMaryland2013 Conference, SAIC said Monday.

SAIC, UMBC and DBED co-founded the contest with the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Tech Council of Maryland with a goal to organize an event where students and technologists can showcase their talents.

“Future cyber experts can become better skilled to help protect our nation’s critical information infrastructure,” said Lou Von Thaer, SAIC senior vice president and national security sector president.

“By bringing together great minds to take on challenges, whether policy or technical, we contribute directly to protect national security, advance education and grow careers,” Von Thaer added.

The competition will include orientations and practice sessions starting this month.

In September, online qualifying rounds will start via the Cyber Network Exercise System that SAIC developed for acquiring cybersecurity skills and certifications.

The final round kicks off on Oct. 8 and winners from the high school, college and professional divisions will be announced Oct. 9 in conjunction with the Cyber Maryland Conference.
