Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) visited a Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Newport News Friday to observe the company’s production activities and communicate with workers.

President and CEO Mike Petters led the tour of the Newsport News Shipbuilding division’s facilities, where the company assembles aircraft carriers, vessels and submarines, Huntington Ingalls said Friday.

“The accompanying discussion encompassed the HII portfolio of ships and what they contribute to our nation, to include destroyers, amphibious assault ships and National Security Cutters,” Petters said.

Kaine and Durbin also viewed the USS Gerald R. Ford, an aircraft carrier that is 62 percent complete and scheduled to be christened Nov. 9.

Durbin, the Senate’s assistant majority leader, serves as chairman of the Appropriations Committee’s defense subcommittee and Kaine is a member of the Armed Services Committee.
