Bechtel Helps Los Alamos National Laboratory Set Waste Shipping Record

BechtelLogo (1)The Los Alamos National Laboratory, managed and operated by Bechtel and the University of California, has shipped 1,074 cubic meters of radioactively contaminated transuranic waste with three months left of fiscal 2013.

That figure tops its record of 916 cubic meters TRU waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Loving, N.M. for the full fiscal 2012, Bechtel said Monday.

“Safely surpassing the 2012 record is an important milestone for the project and the communities of New Mexico and would not be possible without the substantial efforts of the program’s employees and its partners,” said Michael Graham, Bechtel manager for U.S. environmental operations.

Shipped waste includes clothing, tools, equipment and other items tainted with plutonium and other radioactive elements from nuclear research and weapons production.

The Los Alamos TRU Waste Program supports an agreement with the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Energy Department’s office of environment management and New Mexico Environmental Department to remove over 3,700 cubic meters of radioactive by June 2014.
