A DRS Technologies Inc. division will install equipment intended to improve the computing capabilities of automobiles and weapons systems under a potential $455 million three-year project of the U.S. Army.

The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with two one-year options seeks to acquire portable and energy-efficient tools and devices for more than 40 kinds of armament and vehicles of a military facility in Maryland, DRS said Thursday.

The company’s Network and Imaging Systems unit will work in Florida to design and assemble materials that include docking stations, installation kits, network servers, tablets and touch-screen displays of three sizes.

An objective of the program is to boost the strategic advantage of the armed forces on battlefield operations, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense and current DRS Technologies CEO William J. Lynn said.

According to DRS Network and Imaging Systems President Mike Sarrica, the company aims to provide networking technologies that meet military needs for cost-effective, multifunctional and reliable command and control capabilities.

“Our partnership with U.S. ground forces began more than one decade ago and has resulted in the delivery of some 200,000 computing and display systems to the Army, Marines, Special Operations Command and joint/coalition forces,” Sarrica added.

A key target of the project is to provide the military with three types of hardware that analyze and process data for information on different levels of battlefield digitization, mission command and situational awareness.

The systems will be developed in line with joint defense force requirements and Warfighter Information Network-Tactical standards.
