Northrop to Sponsor HS Team in Aircraft Design Contest; Ian Irving Comments

Ian IrvingNorthrop Grumman will support an Australian high school team that will compete to design, build and demonstrate an unmanned aircraft for life-saving missions.

The 2013 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Outback Challenge is a joint initiative between government and research organizations in the country and aims to promote civilian use of such planes, Northrop said.

“This is a great opportunity to mentor tomorrow’s leaders in aerospace and other technical career fields and to help create a future generation of aerospace professionals with a focus on UAVs,” said Ian Irving, CEO of Northrop’s Australia business.

Students must develop aircraft capable of tracking a lost or injured person and delivering critical cargo within two square meters.

Company officials and employees will meet with the participants from Dickson College to share insights about UAV development.

“Forging this partnership with Dickson College provides students with tangible ways to explore and develop their field of interest, whether that is engineering, mathematics, science or project management,” Irving added.
