A report from a private-public consortium found that one in three cybersecurity professionals believe California and the Greater Washington D.C. metro area are the top destinations for cyber innovation.

Semper Secure’s Cyber Security Census also found 56 percent of cybersecurity professionals are motivated by the challenge of their jobs, 44 percent like being part of important tasks and 39 percent love technology, the consortium said Monday.

The survey of 500 cyber security professionals from 40 industries in 43 states noted that only 25 percent of respondents identified high salary and benefits as their top interest in pursuing the field.

According to Semper Secure, a Burning Glass Technologies report echoed its results by saying 44 percent of cyber pros want to be part of an organization with a well-respected code of honor.

Lee Vorthman, chief technology officer for federal civilian agencies at NetApp, agreed, noting, “These people aren’t jumping from job to job looking for salary bumps and signing bonuses.”

“Many of them want to work for federal agencies and most of them tend to stick with employers for the long term,” he added.

The Cyber Security Census was underwritten by Northrop Grumman, MeriTalk‘s Cyber Security Exchange and NetApp.

Jim Duffey, technology secretary from the Office of the Governor of Virginia, was quoted as saying cyber professionals look into government agencies and defense/aerospace companies because they are all “about the hottest technology deployed by honorable organizations for a purpose that is inherently important.”

“It is no surprise that Virginia is an ideal location for these types of people,” Duffey said.
