Siemens has won a $26.5 million contract to supply signaling equipment for a railways system in Algeria’s capital of Algiers, the Railway Gazette reported Tuesday.

The Enterprise Metro d’Alger construction firm selected Siemens to equip a 2-mile extension of ¬†Metro Line 1 with the Siemens Trainguard MT Communications control, which works to operate the trains automatically.

A Colas Rail consortium and KOU.G.C. will construct the extension, intended to add four more stations to Line 1.

That underground extension is scheduled to be operational by 2015, the report said.
