Lockheed Co-Sponsors Cyber Event for Maryland STEM Students; Chandra McMahon Comments

Lockheed-Martin-BlueLockheed Martin, the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Tech Council of Maryland have co-sponsored an event to support high school students who plan to pursue studies and careers in the cybersecurity field.

Cyber Security Awareness Day was held to expose students who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to opportunities for college education and future professions, Lockheed said Friday.

Nearly 200 STEM students participated in the forum at the Lockheed Martin NexGen Cyber Innovation & Technology Center in Maryland.

“We need to encourage students to choose a path in STEM education and consider a future in the cyber security profession,” said Chandra McMahon, vice president of commercial markets and cyber security for Lockheed’s information systems and global solutions .

According to McMahon, the Labor Department expects math or science proficiency to be a significant requirement for 20 occupations to have strong demand by next year.

CyberWatch, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Institute for Standards and Technology and six educational institutions were invited to participate in the 2013 Cyber Security Awareness Day.
