Harris-Built SATCOM Antenna Reflectors Carried Into Space

HARRIS1A military communications satellite built by Lockheed Martin that launched July 19 contained two unfurlable mesh antenna reflectors constructed by Harris Corp.

The second Mobile User Objective System satellite deployed the reflectors and the company will build 10 total reflectors for each of the five MUOS satellites, Harris said Monday.

One reflector is a 46-foot diameter unit for multi-beam operations that is designed to increase the number of users and traffic the MUOS system can support.

A second 17.7-foot diameter unit is intended for legacy operations, Harris says.

The Navy intends for the MUOS to give military users 16 times more narrowband tactical satellite communications capability than existing ultra high frequency satellites and be compatible with legacy systems.
