The system has entered operational readiness and its planned deployment in Romania is part of NATO’s European Phased Adaptive Approach initiative for ballistic missile defense, Lockheed announced Monday.
According to the company, the system’s second “light off” in six months also comes ahead of its first live test in 2014 at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
The Aegis Ashore system uses the newest generation of BMD, a successor to the sea-based Aegis BMD.
