Lockheed-Led Team Heads to DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals; Bill Borgia Comments

Lockheed-Martin-BlueLockheed Martin‘s team is one of eight teams who will compete in the final rounds of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency-hosted robotics competition next year.

DARPA launched the challenge for technology firms to design robots capable of performing a series of emergency response tasks and the agency will award a $2 million grand prize to the winning team, Lockheed said Tuesday.

In recent trials, the Lockheed team programmed an Atlas robot to drive a vehicle, climb a ladder, attach hose to a fire hydrant and walk over hazards.

“The DARPA Robotics Challenge presented an exciting competition for our team,” said Bill Borgia, a director at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories.

“It helped us further our expertise in developing robotic autonomy. We’ll continue to move that technology forward both in this challenge and our other efforts,” Borgia added.

Lockheed members include developers from the University of Pennsylvania and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
