Executive Profile: Mike Petters, Huntington Ingalls Industries President and CEO

Mike Petters, Huntington Ingalls - ExecutiveMosaicMike Petters serves as president and CEO of military shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries, which completed its spinoff from Northrop Grumman in March 2011.

Petters has held both roles since Huntington Ingalls became an independent company and also serves on the board of directors.

Prior to the spinoff, he served as president of Northrop’s shipbuilding division (now Huntington Ingalls) for three years and is also a former president of Northrop’s former Newport News Shipbuilding organization.

He joined Newport News Shipbuilding in 1987 and held other operational and leadership positions there.

Huntington Ingalls designs, constructs and performs overhaul work on surface combatant ships, amphibious and auxiliary ships; and nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers.

Petters serves on the board of directors for Virginia’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates, the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and also is a member of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation’s board of trustees.

He graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1982, then served in the Navy onboard the nuclear-powered submarine USS George Bancroft and then spent five years in the Naval Reserve.

In 1993, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the College of William and Mary.
