Inmarsat Holds Industry, Gov’t Maritime Panel; Chris McLaughlin Comments

inmarsat-logoInmarsat brought together maritime industry experts and parliamentary representatives at the company’s London office for an Industry and Parliament Trust panel discussion.

Topics included marine conservation and illegal fishing, maritime security and the role of e-navigation in promoting shipping competition, Inmarsat said Thursday.

The company also presented the Global Xpress system, a broadband service designed to provide high-speed network capabilities for the shipping industry.

Chris McLaughlin, senior vice president of external affairs and marketing communications at Inmarsat, said the company aims to use the L-band and Global Xpress networks to support the connectivity requirements of the maritime trade and industry sectors in the future.

Field and government representatives also discussed the role of technological and information sharing tools to help bolster the country’s competitiveness in the global maritime industry.

Officials at the panel included:

  • Jeremy Penn, Baltic Exchange CEO and Maritime UK vice chairman
  • Russell Brown, a shadow minister and member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fisheries
  • Peter Hinchliffe, secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping
