Executive Profile: Andras Szakal, IBM Federal VP & CTO

Andras SzakalAndras Szakal serves vice president and chief technology officer for the U.S. federal practice at IBM, where he is responsible for IBM’s industry technology strategy in support of U.S. federal customers.

He leads a department of enterprise and technical architects responsible for developing e-Government software architectures using IBM technology and solutions.

ExecutiveBiz caught up with Szakal in April 2012 to discuss his work with IBM’s research teams on developing new technologies and the company’s plans to pursue growth in the cloud computing market.

In 2005, Szakal was appointed IBM distinguished engineer and director of IBM’s federal software architecture team.

Before joining IBM in 1998, he was a member of the technical staff within Bell Atlantic’s (Verizon) federal division and broadband systems.

Szakal represents the IBM software group on the board of directors of The Open Group and currently holds the chair of the IT architect profession certification standard (ITAC).

He holds undergraduate degrees in biology and computer science and a master’s degree in computer science from James Madison University.
