Ari Schwartz, formerly senior director for cybersecurity policy at the White House’s National Security Council, has joined Venable as managing director of cybersecurity services at the Washington-based law firm.

Venable said Wednesday that Schwartz will work with enterprise clients to help them develop risk management plans and strategies in order to secure their systems against cyber threats.

He will also help expand the service offerings of the company’s privacy and data security practice group in his new position.

“I have worked with Ari for many years in his various government roles and when he worked with the Center for Democracy and Technology and always found him to be thoughtful and effective in his approach to complex issues,” said Stuart Ingis, partner-in-charge at Venable’s Washington office.

Schwartz previously helped the White House coordinate policies for agencies to protect federal networks, critical infrastructure and supply chains as well as share threat information.

In addition to that role, he also served as a special assistant to the U.S. president.
