Former JCS Vice Chairman James Winnefeld Named Perthera Senior Adviser

James Winnefeld

James Winnefeld, former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a retired U.S. Navy admiral, has joined Perthera as a senior adviser of the McLean, Virginia-based precision medicine company.

The 37-year Navy veteran will advise Perthera on business matters, the company said Tuesday.

“I have had the opportunity to become a board member or a strategic adviser to some exciting companies, but this is a unique dual opportunity of helping this Perthera achieve success in both business terms and in achieving its mission of fighting and conquering cancer,” said Winnefeld.

He previously served as an instructor at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, a senior aide-de-camp to Gen. Colin Powell and commander of the USS Cleveland amphibious ship, USS Enterprise carrier and the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.

Winnefeld also led the NATO Joint Command Lisbon, Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

He is a current professor within the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology as well as a member of the university’s Engineering Hall of Fame and the advisory board.

He also serves as a non-resident fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs within Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, board member at the U.S. Naval Institute and a member of the U.S. Naval Academy’s board of visitors.
