Julie Gravallese, a vice president and chief human resources officer of Mitre, has said managers at the McLean, Virginia-based nonprofit research and development organization help advance career development among employees through annual conversations, the Society for Human Resource Management reported Tuesday.
Kathy Gurchiek writes Gravallese told HR People+Strategy Conference attendees Monday that managers facilitate CLEAR conversations with each employee on a mid-year basis in an effort to determine the employee’s career aspirations as part of Mitre’s Careers in Motion program.
CLEAR stands for communicate, learn, evaluate, align and results.
Topics of such conversations include the employee’s work preferences and strengths, responsibilities and work experiences, career aspirations and training opportunities that seek to support an employee’s career goals.
Gravallese noted that the company used online videos and other tools to test CLEAR conversations at the senior-executive level in order to guide leaders on how to carry out such conversations with employees.
She noted that managers should discuss with their employees job expectations, feedback on performance and development opportunities and that job expectations should be readjusted with the changes in assignment priorities and designation of new projects.
