The Defense Security Service has given the 2017 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award to 36 company facilities for maintaining high standards for industrial security.
DSS said Thursday the winning facilities represent various large and small companies such as BAE Systems, Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ Camber subsidiary, CGI Group, Concurrent Technologies Corp., General Dynamics, Harris, Lockheed Martin, Modern Technology Solutions Inc. and Jacobs Engineering Group.
The Cogswell award was presented at the National Classification Management Society’s annual training seminar in Anaheim, California.
The 36 awardees were selected from a pool of approximately 13,500 cleared facilities that are subject to regular evaluation.
Facilities may only be nominated by DSS’ industrial security representative for the award if they have at least two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings that show a sustained degree of excellence in overall security program management, implementation and oversight.
DSS chooses the awardees based on their efforts to establish and maintain a security program that exceeds the basic National Industrial Security Program requirements, as well as provide leadership to other cleared facilities in developing best practices and maintaining high security standards.
The recognition was initiated in 1966 in honor of James Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security within the Defense Department and former U.S. Air Force colonel.
Cogswell led the development of the Industrial Security Program’s basic principles.
