Lockheed, Discovery Education Launch Mars Habitation Module Design Challenge in UK

Lockheed Martin has partnered with digital education services provider Discovery Education to launch a video challenge for U.K. students to design a space habitation module that could help NASA bring humans to Mars.

The challenge is part of Lockheed’s Generation Beyond program that aims to encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers, the company said Friday.

The Generation Beyond Challenge calls on U.K. primary school students aged 9 to 11 years old to explain how they would design a habitation module for the first manned mission to the Red Planet in a short video.

Participants may join individually or as a group for a chance to win one of two $6,540 STEM grants and iPads, among other prizes.

The Generation Beyond program offers a free online space curriculum for teachers and families, including digital resources such as lesson plans, educator guides and family activities.

The program has reached more than 1.5 million students in the U.S. since August 2016.

Students can submit entries for the U.K. Generation Beyond Challenge until Dec. 15.
